Day 1 of LOVE week!

I am so excited for Joely and Travis and it has nothing to do with the fact that Joely is my niece, haha. Since they live in Chelan and a little vaca sounded fun, we decided to do their shoot there. We picked places that were very special to them. Joely works at a couple of wineries and runs a wine blog, so of course, we had to do some of her session among the grape vines. Our next choice, was more something I wanted with more formal clothing and dramatic images and I love how they turned out and where we found the perfect spot! Our next location was the future spot of their home – how perfect is that… and the last place, a special childhood memory of Joely’s. Every summer her parents would take her to Chelan, along with her cousins (my kids) and they would play on this dock, swim in the pool just above it and jump into the lake. Great memories that deserved a spot in her engagement session.

Aren’t they adorable!  They think the world of each other.Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0021.jpg
We had already walked back to our cars and gotten in, ready to drive to the next location when I noticed this view and stopped them in time to take advantage of it.  Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0022.jpg
I found this location when driving to my SIL’s house.  It’s just down the street (also very close to where Joely and Travis will build their first home).  I loved the two tall trees and just had to use them!Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0005.jpg
Like I stated before, this outfit change was my vision and I’m so glad they were willing to step out of the norm for them and dress up.  I love what we captured!Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0006.jpg

This is what I was really after with this outfit!  Drama!  I found this location just down the road from the tall trees.  I wish I would have taken a step back and captured the whole area for you to see.  You might easily pass it and think nothing of it, but I was so excited to create something very special for them.Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0011.jpg

I’m so glad they found each other.  They are getting married at Thornewood Castle in August and I can’t wait to be part of her special day, not only as her Auntie, but as her photographer too!  Amanda (my daughter) is a bridesmaid and Joe (my husband and second shooter) will be singing a song for the first dance and helping me capture the day.  It’s a family event for sure!Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0018.jpg

We did this shoot over a 2 day period and this was our last location.  My kids have memories at this spot too, since they spent many summers here with their Auntie, Uncle and Joely.Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0023.jpg
I love this image so much :).Engagement Tacoma Lake Chelan Thornewood Castle Photographer Photo Joely_0024.jpg

Maren is a senior at Gig Harbor High School and after the first session she decided she wanted another :)! Yay! You can see her first one here. I’m glad we could do more and use more of the park. There are so many awesome locations that I only get to use a few of the spots for each session. Maren got to use lots of different areas with 2 sessions! We knew that this time we wanted to use more of the barn area and just by chance we got sun too! Woohoo!

Since we had the sun, we might as well use it!

I could tell that Maren had gotten the hang of it from the last session, so this time we were even more efficient with our time :).

It’s so cool how landscapes change. There used to be a barn here and since it fell down in a storm it’s been fenced off for over a year. Now it’s completely gone and bam, a new area to use!

More fun in full sun!

Maren brought her brother to this session. I’ll be doing his senior session next!

Amanda’s a 2016 Stadium High School senior, but is also a full time running start student at TCC and will have her AA degree at the same time as her high school diploma. How awesome is that! This is our third senior session together and since Amanda is my daughter, there will be more! She likes to give each one a totally differnt look. The first was a super short mountain session since we got to a late start.  The second was a 50’s look at the WA State Fair grounds and this third one she wanted to experiment with the 60’s and a more city look.  Hair was done by my best bud, Misty Winesberry and the makeup was by Amanda.  It’s just one of her many passions and she’s so great at it!  Since I’ve talked about all of the normal senior stuff in past posts, with this one let’s just talk about Amanda and the images.

Amanda is a very confident girl.  She takes risks, which I really admire, since at her age I was definitely not much of a risk taker.  Don’t get me wrong, I did some very hard things that seemed risky, but only because I was forced to.  Amanda takes them on all on her own.  She tries new things and doesn’t consider failing.  She went from a 12 year “career” in ballet to being a Corporal in the Explorer’s Program with the Tacoma Police Department.  She still wears a bun haha, but now she can shoot a gun, defend herself, slap some handcuffs on a bad guy and has completed 2 boot camps scoring the top score in academics.

My favorite image is the one on the far left.  I love the look with wide eyes.  Very 60’s!  Usually when we plan a session there is the want of new clothes, but for this one, she just pulled out items she already owned.  We didn’t put a lot of pressure on ourselves either.  We just took our time with preparing and when it started getting a little cloudy before we anticipated we didn’t let it stress us.  We found a great spot, the light was perfect and it just all flowed.  Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0013.jpg
With this season we knew we wanted something different.  I usually approach senior sessions with a type of formula in my head, but with this session I put that aside and had the freedom of experimenting with expressions, poses, atmosphere and editing style.  I try to stay very consistent in my sessions, but when asked, I love to try things that are out of the box for me and Amanda always requests that of me!  If you are a senior and want something different, just ask!  Art is art and should not be limited!Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0014.jpg
Another favorite of mine.  I love the outfits she picked out!  Those knee high boots just takes it to that next level.Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0015.jpg
Amanda loves to read.  She has stacks of books in her room and I know she dreams of reading them all.  She’s an intellectual like her brother, but uses it in a different way.  She loves to debate (also like her brother) and loves to talk politics and current affairs.  Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0016.jpg
Amanda also loves fashion and glamour.  She doesn’t always get to use it in her daily life, but when she gets the chance to dress up and take time on the makeup, she loves it!  This girl has more makeup than anyone I know!  Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0017.jpg
Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0018.jpg
Amanda is also an awesome writer and I know as she goes through life it will be a great skill to have.  She is constantly told by teachers and professors that she is one of the best writers in the class.  She must get that from her daddy, since he writes for a magazine and can whip out an article in no time with no edits required.Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0019.jpg
Another set of my favorites.  I loved the color tones we achieved in this whole series of images.Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0020.jpg
Oh yes, and another favorite!  I wanted a more vintage color palette for this session so I kept that in mind when editing.  I wanted a little warmth, a little on the matte side and a darker, deeper black and white finish for some.Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0021.jpg
I have to say, that of all the sessions Amanda and I have done together, this one is my favorite.  We were relaxed and just had fun together.  That sets the mood of the whole session.  Now I’m looking forward to our next one.  We haven’t decided what we are going to do just yet, but I’m excited already!Senior Girl Model Tacoma Stadium High Seattle Photographer Amanda_0022.jpg

Philip Floyd - Got the 60s on the 1st photo. Great work. Gave your name to a new artist today. Needs to have the work photograph. Lots of great charcoal and pencil work.ReplyCancel

Elizabeth attends Pierce College through the Running Start home school option. She’s a dance and visual arts instructor at the YMCA and plans to go to University of Oregon and major in psychology. Her interests include dance, art, cosmetology, psychology, movies, animals, and a million and one random things like sloths. Lots of sloths. haha

Elizabeth was such a joy to spend the day with. Her style is beyond awesome and I loved all her color and vintage type pieces.

I wasn’t going to do a Christmas post this year, but after lots of interest I thought I would once again share my love of Christmas Trees with you. Be sure to see all the past posts, since they all give a different perspective.  Here’s the link to last year’s post and from there you can link to the others :).  I hope you enjoy!

My parlor tree was a new one last year and with a 1 year old puppy I’m surprised it survived the season. I originally bought the tree to make it into a snowman. I have the top hat and the red scarf and was going to fill it with snowman ornaments. I quickly changed my mind though and decided on a woodland creature tree instead. I love the look of this tree, even though it’s artifical and flocked it has a very natural woodsy feeling.

I continually add ornaments to the trees that have some sort of significance in our lives and this year I added a nest – we had a bird build a nest right outside our back door this past year (but the babies were stolen by a crow). The other new one was a white kitty ornament, since we are getting a kitty this next year and I was afraid I might not find the right ornament next year.

This is the room and tree we have Christmas morning in.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0001.jpg

We also did a craft for this tree last year. I bought the wood rounds and Joe wood burned our initials in a heart on one side, and we tried adding pictures to the backs… but that didn’t turn out so great, haha. We tried!  We have one for Joe and I, Nick and his Amanda and our Amanda and Aidan.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0003.jpg

This star is a little different that the other trees. I wanted it more rustic and overly big.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0002.jpg

Trees aren’t the only decorations in the house, even though they are the prominant ones. Last year I added 3 more Christmas stockings! One for our dog (aka Ketters) and one for Amanda’s boyfriend, Aidan and Nick’s girlfriend, Amanda.  I love filling the socks and I challenge myself every year to make them extra awesome!  Both of my kids agree, it’s their favorite part of opening gifts :).
Christmas Trees Take 2_0004.jpg

The next tree is the living room tree (which used to be in the diningroom). It’s our “memory” tree for the most part. Every year I add an ornament from either a vacation or an event that happened in the year. This year we added the record player to signify that Joe started a little side business in stereo equipment. It’s really just based off of a passion of his. We also opened the guitar paint shop but we already have so many guitars I didn’t add another one (the entire basement tree is full of them).
Christmas Trees Take 2_0005.jpg

Amanda got a moon tattoo for her 18th birthday and Nick turned 21! Two new ornaments…
Christmas Trees Take 2_0006.jpg

Ketters was excited as I took these photos of the trees and if you look closely at some of the upcoming photos you’ll spot him :). You can see white flock on his sweater from hanging too closely to the parlor tree :).
Christmas Trees Take 2_0007.jpg

Our dining room has some decorations too. I added more glass balls to the wreath last year, since I needed to thin the ornaments out on the living room to make room for memory ones.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0008.jpg

The kitchen nook has a little tree too. I got this one at The Home Depot a few years ago and it’s the perfect size for a small area. I changed out the star and got a Christopher Radko topper instead. I love the retro feel and the perfect colors! It’s the only tree without a star now.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0009.jpg
Christmas Trees Take 2_0010.jpg

The basement tree is dedicated to music. The only thing added to this tree this year was more of the red berries embelishing it. You can never have too many embelishments and if you look closely every tree has them. I think it’s what makes them looks so special. I could spend so much money on tree decorations, which is why I only add a little every year. It makes it fun to watch them develop over the years.

Christmas Trees Take 2_0011.jpg
Christmas Trees Take 2_0012.jpg

Nick’s Tree is waiting for him to come home from college. It’s entirely decorated with penguins except a few WSU ornaments.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0013.jpg

His new one this year is from the Tacoma Glass Blowing Studio. The same place I get my glass pumpkins from. He loves glass, like I do and I knew it was perfect for him!
Christmas Trees Take 2_0014.jpg

He also has a few other decorations around his room. Ketters loved this penguin, especially when I turned it on and it did it’s little dance :).
Christmas Trees Take 2_0015.jpg

Our bedroom tree is one of my favorites. I just love the colors. Gold, copper, black, and cream.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0016.jpg

I have a lot of embelishments on this one. I got most of them in the artificial flower section of the local craft store and just bent them in where I wanted them. I’m telling you, if you think something is missing from your tree, it’s this and maybe some ribbon to go around them too. It adds so much!
Christmas Trees Take 2_0017.jpg

We have some new ornaments, one I made last year (the ring of vintage jewelry pieces is made from old scraps my mom had (she passed away in Dec. 1993)). I also have an ornament that Amanda’s friend, Emily gave me. She picked it up from Hawaii on a vacation and thought of us, since we honeymooned there in 1989 and vowed to visit every 5 years and haven’t been back since :(.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0018.jpg

Amanda’s tree is made up of white, black, blue and pink mostly with chandeliers, snowflakes, ballet and misc ornaments.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0019.jpgWe planned on putting a picture in that empty frame below… but just haven’t gotten to it!

Christmas Trees Take 2_0020.jpg

We added a few ornaments we found at Hobby Lobby and added the ribbon this year too.  So pretty!
Christmas Trees Take 2_0021.jpg

Amanda bought this decoration herself in October. She just couldn’t wait until Dec. to do some decorating. She LOVES Christmas and promises to continue the multiple tree tradition when she has her own house. I will certainly help! That’s for sure.
Christmas Trees Take 2_0022.jpg

I hope you enjoyed the tour of the trees this year and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!

Ashley wanted a family mini session with her dogs in time for Christmas cards, so that’s what we did! We treated the dogs like they were kids and had a great time capturing this family. If you don’t know already, animals are one of my favorite things in the world and so combining photography with pets, a perfect combination and I totally encourage it! I mean, how cute are these images!!
